Pile testing is a set of measures aimed at checking the bearing capacity of piles before using them in construction. These tests allow one to determine what kind of load a pile can withstand, how it behaves in the ground, and whether its characteristics meet the design requirements.

What is the pile testing for?

  • The load–bearing capacity test is the determination of the maximum load that a pile can withstand without breaking.
  • Immersion quality assessment is the identification of pile defects or deviations from design parameters.
  • Accident prevention is the prevention of precipitation, subsidence and other negative consequences due to insufficient foundation strength.
  • Foundation optimization is the adjustment of calculations that allows one to choose the most effective and economically viable solutions.
  • Compliance with regulatory requirements – tests are necessary to confirm the reliability of a pile foundation in accordance with building standards.

Types of pile testing

  • Static testing is the gradual loading of a pile with a static load (vertical, horizontal or inclined) with the measurement of settlement and deformations.
  • Dynamic testing is the impact of a shock load using a hammer or a vibrating loader to assess the load–bearing capacity and quality of immersion.
  • Acute force tests are the loading of piles at high rate to assess their behavior under short–term loads.
  • Probing tests are the study of ground resistance during immersion of a probe that simulates the operation of a pile.

Main stages of pile testing:

  • Preparation – selection of piles for testing, installation of equipment.
  • Conducting tests – loading piles according to a given methodology and recording the results.
  • Data analysis – processing of results, calculation of load-bearing capacity, identification of possible defects.
  • Reporting - preparation of a technical report with recommendations on the use of piles.

Pile testing is an important step in the construction of bridges, high-rise buildings, industrial facilities, and any structures with deep foundations. They ensure safety and durability of structures, preventing possible errors during the design and construction of the foundation.
